Every year thousands of tourists travel to Mexico for an enjoyable vacation - which is what most of them get - however some come back with something worse than Montezumos ex-girlfriend revenge: a timeshare package which they regret buying. Here you can find some information that may help you fix that mexican timeshare problem.
First of all you should know that this year 2008 the Mexican government tightened up its regulations in relation to the way timeshare packages can be sold in Mexico. No longer can you be approached in the street or airport and offer one of the deals - usually accompanied by a free breakfast or tickets to an event - in public areas.
Some timeshare clubs would catch you as you got off the plane and once they got hold of your hotel details would follow-up all week in trying sell its timeshare properties. Now they can no longer do that. For once they and the other timeshare sellers in Mexico will have to start respecting peoples privacy - and that will hopefully mean a better and more decent vacation for holiday-makers who will no longer have to be bothered by pestering salespeople.
Another long standing Mexican law, but one which is often disregarded by the timeshare companies, is the 5 day rescind clause. If you do happen to buy a timeshare and even if you get back home and then get buyers remorse once that holiday atmosphere has gone and you are firmly back to reality then you can rescind your timeshare purchase agreement within 5 working days of it being signed. Some timeshare companies have denied this to their new customers but the law is the law.
If you find that you are in this group you should write/fax the company you purchased your timeshare from and also contact Profeco, the Mexican body that deals with consumer rights. Send them a copy too and let the timeshare company know you did too - that way they will be more likely to respect your wishes.
